Resume Builder Review LiveCareer

Resume Builder Review LiveCareerResume Builder Review LiveCareerFor job seekers who want more control over the resume creation process than a resume template typically offers, a resume buildercan be a great option. There are countless resume builders online. To help job seekers find the best one for them, well be posting a series of resume builder reviews. First up is LiveCareer.Created in 2004, LiveCareer now has around 10 million registered users and offers numerous job resources. In addition to their resume builder, LiveCareer has a cover letterbuilder, a jobs board, quizzes and surveys, and a wealth of articles covering all aspects of the job hunt.Getting abflugedThere are two ways to create a resume with LiveCareers resume builder. You can either build a resume from scratch, or you can upload an existing document. The document must be a .doc, .docx, .htm, .odt, .pdf, .rtf, or .txt file. Once youve decided which route to take, you provide LiveCareer with some basic information ab out your career- LiveCareer uses this information to suggest specific resume formats. First, you choose your experience level student, entry level, experienced, manager, or executive. Then you choose your industry information from dozens and dozens of options. Finally, you indicate whether any of the following apply to your work history employment gaps changing jobs frequently changing career fields consulting, contracting, or freelancing or transitioning out of the military. If you choose to start from scratch, youll be taken straight to a page featuring recommended resume layouts. You can then enter all of your own information. If you choose to upload a document, LiveCareer will attempt to enter your information into the appropriate fields. As with applicant tracking systems, this is a process that doesnt work perfectly. The resume builder repeated information from the sample resume we used, and also placed random words and incomplete phrases from throughout the resume into the ski lls section. Some information was omitted entirely, including the sample candidates graduation date and the duration of a volunteer position. When uploading an existing resume, LiveCareer will attempt to plug your information into the right spots in its resume templates. This doesnt work perfectly.EditingFirst, choose the resume design you like best from the ones provided on the right side of the screen. Then you can get to work editing your information. If you want to remove a section, all you have to do is hover over it and select delete. Its easy to delete unwanted sections, such as this summary section, from your resume.Rearranging sections is easy. For example, if youre a recent graduate, youll probably want to move your education section to the top. To move a section, all you have to do is click on it and then move it up or down by clicking the arrows (at the center of the screenshot below). To add a section, such as one to highlight your volunteer work, you can choose from the p rovided list or you can create your own.The drawback to adding sections is that, while you can enterany information you choose, the formatting flexibility of added sections is limited. Its not always possible to format an added section to match other sections on the resume. Its easy to rearrange sections into the order you want. To add sections, choose from a list or create your own.Overall, the editing options for LiveCareers resume builder offer little finesse. There is a tab on the right side of the screen that allows you to control things such as margins, indentations, and typeface. Most of these formatting options apply to the entire document. You can also edit individual entries within a section. The editing menu that comes up allows you to edit the information included in the entry itself- this is where we were able to fix the candidates skills that the resume builder misinterpreted. But there are limits to the changes you can make to a sections appearance. You cant change the o rder in which the information appears, or the details of how the template presents the information. If you do choose to edit a section individually, make sure that you apply the edits consistently throughout all sections of the resume.A screenshot of the resume builders section editor. The resume builder autosaves on a regular basis. When exiting out of the editing menu, a eingabeaufforderung appearsasking whether you want to save or cancel your changes. Combined, these should keep you from losing your any of work.PricingOnce youre happy with your resume, youre taken to the purchasing step. Pricing for the resume builder is subscription-based, with a couple of options. For $1.95, you can download your finished resume, plus create unlimited others. This is perfect for candidates who take the step of tailoring a resume for each individual job. There is a caveat If you do not cancel your subscription by phone or by email within 14 days, your subscription will be auto-renewed at $9.95 pe r week, billed every 4 weeks. The other option is to pay $95.40 up-front for a year-long subscription. This works out to $7.95 per month. The yearly subscription also auto-renews, meaning the onus is on you to cancel.LiveCareers payment options are subscription-based. The subscriptions auto-renew, so you must contact LiveCareer to cancel when youre done.If you have a straightforward resume, you are unlikely to encounter any issues with the formatting limits of this resume builder. If you have extra sections to add, or want to drill down into the details, you might be better off with a different resume builder, a resume template, or simply creating your own.

This is why your ego is not actually your enemy

This is why yur selbst is leid actually yur enemyThis is why yur ich is elend actually your enemyThe ego has a bad rap - it has become the villain of self-help. We associate it to being entitled or arrogant. Thats why we want to get rid of this enemy. However, your ego is leid the problem, your illusion of self is.According to psychologists, if we dont have an ego, we would become mentally ill. We need it to mediate between the unconscious and the conscious. Your relationship with your ego can turn into either an enemy or an ally. The ego causes fruchtwein of your suffering, but it can also save you from further pain. The ich Is a FraudThe ego is the worst confidence trickster we could ever imagine. - Dr. Yoav DattiloOur ego is a curious beast - most of us dont realize its existence, yet we are under its mercy. We usually associate the word ego with being arrogant, proud, or selfish. However, our ego is a different thing - it magnifies either our best or worst side. Thats why the e go is the worst confidence trickster we end buying the exaggerated version of ourselves. The illusory self is a seductive fantasy - thats why we succumb to our ego. We let it hold the reins of our lives without any resistance. The ego hides in the last place you will ever look within itself. Disguised as your thoughts or feelings, your ego tricks you. When you believe you are your ego, youll do anything to keep that illusion alive. When you desire to be perceived as the smartest boss, the beloved mom, the best negotiator, the kindest woman, the funniest guy, the most creative writer - fill in the blanks - you allow your ego to take over. You self-identify with a single aspect of yourself - preserving that perfect image becomes a life-or-death matter.By wanting to keep our illusory-self happy, elend only we place hope on an impossible goal but also harm ourselves and others. People are willing to lie, kill, cheat, hide, or steal to protect their ego boundaries. If someone criticizes that perfect side, they take it personally - they feel their entire identity is at risk. Why is this happening to me? Everyone wants to be with me. Why is this person attacking me? Nobody listens to meWe are self-absorbed - we make everything about me-me-me We believe that everything revolves around us. We judge what happens through a self-centered filter. The paradox of the unhealthy ego is that, though it seems like a confidence-booster, it creates more harm. By comparing ourselves to others, we create self-doubt. By pursuing endless ambitions, we end disappointed. By pretending things always to go our way, we become bitter and frustrated. The unhealthy ego is a fraud - dont believe your illusory-self is true.We Dont Need Another EgoThe bigger a mans head gets, the easier it is to fill his shoes. - Henry A. CourtneyMost people believe they know themselves, but less than 15% are truly self-aware. Being self-centered or having a distortion of who we are, turns us into a victim of the illusory-self.The ego is you I-ness - it captures your thoughts, beliefs, memories, and emotions regardless if they are good or bad. However, the problem is not the beast itself, but the role it plays.Having no ego would be a disaster - we need something to mediate between our desires and our beliefs and values. Without it, we would become helpless or mentally ill.The egos relentless pursuit of attention and power undermines the goal we want to achieve.Dealing with an unhealthy ego is exhausting. As we aspire to be bigger, richer, smarter, better, stronger or more attractive than others, we are shadowed by a persistent sense of weariness and self-doubt. You dont need another ego you just need to be you.Our ego likes security, certainty, and repetition. It makes us feel comfortable by reinforcing an idealized version of ourselves. If people threaten that illusion, we turn them into an enemy. Thats why ego-driven people engage in constant battles - they want to protect the fragi le fantasy of who they are.The funny part is that we fight to keep an image of ourselves that no one buys into, except us.Your greatest enemy is your inner perception, not your ego.An Ego Is BornThe ego is a way of organizing oneself it comes from the intellect as the mind starts to click in. - Mark EpsteinYou exist therefore, I exist - thats how the ego is born.French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan developed the concept of the Mirror Stage to describe the phenomenon when a child begins to distinguish the self and others - encountering ones image in the mirror makes us realize we are autonomous. The ego is born out of fear and isolation. It creates our identity and separates us from those around us when we were a child. The birth of ego, according to Chgyam Trungpa, is the process of identifying the self in term of opposing ourselves to others. Before we recognize our own existence, we begin to see others strongly. We want to conquer others, creating a snowballing effect that feeds pa ssion, aggression, and ignorance. Our ego not only blinds us but also makes others blind. We want to impose our possibilities over other people - whatever we see, we want others to see too. We believe our vision of the world is the world. The illusion of self goes beyond having an unrealistic vision of who we are. We want to stick to that image forever. We want to the illusion that our self is permanent, but life is fluid, not rigid. We are continually changing - our sense of existence is not permanent. We cant carry our personality to the next life. Many people believe that the ego is just a source of trouble. American Buddhist author Thanissaro Bhikkhu teaches that a healthy, functioning, ego is a crucial tool on the path to awakening.Western psychology and Buddhism agree that the ego is as a creation - we must get it out our head and learn to tame our mind. The Illusion of Being YouYou are who you are when nobodys watching. ? Stephen FryThe illusion of self is like a mask - we wea r an identity thats not real. When we feel under attack or panic, we create a world of duality - Chgyam Trungpa refers to it as the world of ego. This duplicitous and unnecessary invention doesnt allow us to see our true-self clearly.Buddhists recommend egolessness as the antidote to deal with the illusion of self. Most people associate egolessness with getting rid of the ego. However, thats a misconception - the ego is essential to guide our decisions and behavior. Spiritual Bypassing is a term coined to describe those who use spiritual ideas and practices to avoid facing unresolved emotional issues. We must confront our ego instead of running away from it.You must get rid of the illusion of who you are, not of the ego.Let go of the constructed ideas of who you are. Most of them were created when you were a kid. You turned something very good or bad about you into your identity - balancing your ego is accepting all your sides, rather than exaggerating one.Egolessness is a healthy state of mind. The ideas that weve constructed about our self are fixed. Most people overreact to criticism because theyve built their reputation on one idealized trait - if people dislike it, they feel theirwholeidentity would collapse. Most of us will do whatever to protect our illusion of self. When we experience something unpleasant that might hurt our idealized identity, we fight back.Becoming more mindful is essential. Mindfulness helps us neither to cling to whats pleasant nor to condemn whats unpleasant. We dont buy into the illusion of the ego - we are more than that. You can separate the stimulus from your emotional reaction - youchoose how to react, not your ego.Turn Your Ego into anAllyYesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself. ?RumiMany elements that define our identitywere inherited - we cant do much about them. But, we can change how we deal with them - just like with our ego.To stop beingat war with reality, we must flex our ego. When we let go of our idealized-self, we become free. Conversely, when the ego runs our lives, we suffer. The me-me-me approach is draining - forcing the world to revolve around us is mission impossible.Psychologists recommend empowering the observing I - make room for self-reflection and watch yourself from a distance. Confront all aspects of who you are - especially the uncomfortable ones. Make room for yourself. Observe your thoughtsrather than buying into them let go of perfectionism.Buddhists invite us to watch our mind - to observe our thoughts without judging.Mindfulnessis the ability to be present, to be with what happens in the here and now. Its a journey to abandon the illusion of self for the sake of well-being and happiness.Egolessness doesnt mean to get rid of the ego, but of the illusion self. We must undo habitual patterns that weve developed for years.Egolessness means freedom - we liberate ourselves from the anxiety to defend the illusion o f who we are.The Antidote toIllusionYou yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection BuddhaYour self is fluid, not fixed. Our natural tendency is to view, not just ourselves but also others as permanent things. Understanding that everything is interdependent and everything is impermanent is essential. The illusion of the ego means thinking that our identity is a finished product rather than a work in progress.Grab some pictures of yourself from different moments. You probably look different now, right? Look at how your personality or lifestyle has changed through those years. Are you still the saatkorn? Or have you changed? Fluidity means integrating both that we are different and the same.Everything changes and nothing stands still. As Heraclitus said, No person ever steps into the same river twice, for its not the same river and one is not the same person.Thats the paradox of understanding impermanence. We, the same people, are not the ones we were in the past - yet, we are still ourselves. The antidote to the illusion is facing your true-self.Dont take yourself too seriously. The world doesntrevolve around you. Dont be attached to the illusion of self. Embrace well-being and happiness. You are fluid, not fixed.Dont stick to an illusionary self - one aspect of you is not you. Avoid being defensive when someone hurts one side of who you are.People are not your enemies. When you are at peace with who you are, you dont feel the need to fight others.Increase self-consciousness.Egolessness is insight gained from meditation - we dive deep into the emptiness or illusoriness of self and habitual patterns.Love yourself, not your image.Accept your wholeness - both the good and bad. True self-love is appreciating that others feel self-love too.Stop trying to be perfect.Im not suggesting you lower your bar - realize you are not a finished person, buta work in progress.Being vulnerable is being strong. You dont need to sustain an id ealized version of yourself to be accepted by others.Masks are fragile, but nothing can beat your authentic self. The ego is not the enemy - the idealized image of yourself is. Defending an illusion is a draining and useless battle. Stop pretending and start accepting. This time of the year rather than just reflecting on your achievements, spend some time reflecting on who you are.Get rid of the illusion of the perfect self. This article was originally published on Medium.

Optical Tweezers Move Matter at Cellular Level

Optical Tweezers Move Matter at Cellular Level Optical Tweezers Move Matter at Cellular Level Optical Tweezers Move Matter at Cellular LevelOptical tweezers are used by researchers to move micro or nanoscale particles and measure nanometer-scale displacements. This is especially useful in biological and physical research, for example, measuring the motion of individual motor proteins or the mechanical properties of polymers. Optical tweezers rely on a highly focused laser beam to manipulate these tiny objects. But there are some limitations to optical tweezers. For starters, they require high numerical aperture objective lenses, which are bulky and expensive. Their limited working distances and the need for substrate transparency make them less effective in emerging biophysical research areas, such cellular mechanics in a 3D space. An example of that would be measuring the cellular forces associated with proliferation and differentiation. Aleidher way to measure these forces is throu gh atomic force microscopy (AFM). Drawbacks with AFM, however, include that it only measures cellular responses on 2D substrates and must actually touch the cells it is measuring.Determined to improve on this situation, Yuxiang Liu, assistant prof of mechanical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, used light emitted from optical fibers to mechanically trap and interrogate biological particles, such as cells. These optical tweezers are different from traditional optical tweezers in that they only require two optical fibers and can detect nanometer displacement without needing objective lenses. This also makes the system mora compact and cost-effective.Conventional OTs (a) Single Fiber OTs (b) and Counter-propagating DFOTs (c). Image Worcester Polytechnic InstituteHow It WorksLius team developed inclined dual fiber optical tweezers (DFOT)a fiber-based optical trapping system that can simultaneously apply and measure forces on particles both in water and in a 3D polyacrylamid e gel matrix, without touching the particles. DFOT is not constrained by the substrate and can reach particles anywhere within the liquid solution, or encapsulated within a solid 3D compartment.Conventional optical tweezers are typically set up on an inverted microscope platform about a meter in length. They are expensive, require a vibration-free table, and are difficult to use outside the lab environment. In comparison, Lius DFOT are about 100 times shorter in length (1 million times smaller in volume), less expensive, and more portable. Also, since the light is guided through optical fibers, DFOT can work readily outside the lab and in the field. Not only does DFOT create the optical trap, it detects the trapped particle positions at a spatial resolution of 2 nm and a temporal resolution of 100 MHz, without the assistance of an objective lens. As a result, the fiber optical tweezers can calibrate trapping stiffness and measure forces, using a standalone, compact set-up.One of the most interesting aspects of fiber-based optical tweezers is their ability to apply forces on small particles such as biological cells, without any physical contact, says Liu. All you need is to direct the light emitted from the tip of an optical fiber, and you can grasp the cell and put it elsewhere, just like the tractor beam in Star Trek. The researchers calibrated the optical trapping spring constant on microscale silica beads in water and silica beads encapsulated in polyacrylamide gel matrices. The gel stiffness measured in situ using the optical trapping system agreed well with AFM measurements.Since optical trapping measurements do not require the polyacrylamide gel to be mechanically homogeneous, our results imply that inclined DFOT can characterize local mechanical properties of a 3D inhomogeneous, nonlinear medium, says Liu. In addition, by varying optical forces, we successfully changed the effective spring constant on the particles embedded in the gel matrix. This suggest s the inclined DFOT provide a powerful tool to apply forces to cells and measure cellular responses simultaneously in a 3D inhomogeneous environment. As a practical matter, compared with conventional optical tweezers, the fiber optical tweezers are more accessible, affordable, and portable. This will allow more people to use this tool for various fields, including education, scientific research, as well as practical applications, says Liu.Future PossibilitiesThe ability to apply forces in a 3D compartment and measure them in real time makes DFOT an attractive tool for biomechanics studies. For example, DFOT can be used with nonlinear optical microscopy and traction force microscopy for cellular mechanics studies. DFOT can be integrated in microfluidic chips for on-chip cytometry and disease diagnosis. Fiber optical tweezers can also be used for environmental applications, such as water safety measurements and air quality monitoring. What surprises Liu the most about his research is th at, with all the capabilities they provide, fiber optical tweezers are not being aggressively studied and developed. The more I work on them, the more unique applications I visualize, he says.Currently Liu and Qi Wen, his collaborator and associate professor in physics at WPI, are converting the fiber optical tweezers into a module-like system, so that everyone can use them, just like calipers. He hopes DFOT will be commercially available within a few years. If this happens, fiber optical tweezers should have a positive impact on education, adds Liu. If our tool becomes widely available in K-12 classrooms, this tiny tractor beam will likely motivate more students to study STEM areas and, hopefully, use the tool in their careers.Mark Crawford is an independent writer.
